Koi Pond: Biological Filters
Contrary to common belief, biological filters do not process or filter the solid waste of fish in your koi pond. They continue to accumulate and putrefy, creating a breeding ground for harmful species of heterotrophic bacteria that are pathogenic for koi. As indicated, the biological filtration process utilizes Nitrosomonas bacteria to break down ammonia to nitrite and Nitrobacter, besides the conversion nitrite to nitrate, which is less harmful to koi fish.
The plants are now using the nitrate and phosphate for fertilizer, if you have not provided a proper ratio of aquatic plants to koi fish, "hard" algae (on rocks and koi pond walls) and "floating" nitrate using algae and phosphate to reproduce. The key to preventing this condition, known as "algae" is to provide enough plants for nonsoil as water lettuce and hyacinths up for nitrates and phosphates. Since these plants are tropical and can not survive in hot climates such as resistant varieties and Elodea Anacharis will perform well in cold climates. These plants are commonly used in bio-filter ponds.
Pond bio filter is used in conjunction with koi ponds with small populations of koi fish. It will also eliminate the need a mechanical pump bio-filter and a second to make it work. The bio-filter pond is located higher than the pond for two main reasons. It prevents the koi fish eat the plants and it allows water to cascade filter as it passes through the plants before flowing into the lake lower koi.
A proper ratio of vegetation cover for the surface of the koi pond is about 20 to 30 percent. This a basic rule, and many factors can change this equation. For example: the population of koi fish, water temperature, and debris accumulate from sheets or over to feed koi fish. I have said repeatedly that the Koi pond is the exhibition of koi, dining room and restrooms.
If you do not have a bio-filter, which could explain why your koi pond is an air tad green, smelly, or cloudy and why your family is swallowing fins on the surface. Trust me. It will not be for long. How do I clean a water glass?
I have a water glass which is a rectangular shape. It is hollow and pumps water from the bottom and waterfalls with a slit at the top of the glass. Green stuff (do not remember Vietnam!) Began to grow inside the glass. The glass is sealed so I can not enter inside to clean it or put anything into it. I tried some pond clear, but it just clears a patch where the water is pumped through. Does anyone have an idea of what I use to clean it, as I get fed up with it now!
The green stuff is algae. What you can do is to first remove any plants or fish you can about the functionality of glass. Next mix a solution of a cup bleach to one gallon of water. Next drain all the old water fountain. Then add the bleach. activate the pump and let it run through lines. Then let it sit for about half an hour. Then drain the water and add bleach and fresh drinking water. Drain again. Then add a mixture of half vinegar half water. Again run across the fountain and let stand. Next rinse twice more, then add fresh water. To keep the algae back make sure the fountain runs. Whenever the water for a fixed period time leaves room for the growth of algae and the water becomes stagnant.
